ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Fans Praise Towhid Hridoy for Gritty Century in IND vs BAN

Towhid Hridoy became the fifth Bangladeshi player to score a century in the ICC Champions Trophy.

In their opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against India in Dubai on Thursday, Bangladesh were bowled out for 228 runs. The total was largely built on a crucial sixth-wicket partnership of 154 runs off 206 balls between Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy.

Bangladesh’s innings unfolded in three distinct phases. After opting to bat first, they were rattled early, losing their first five wickets for just 35 runs, with the Indian bowlers dominating the first powerplay.

Jaker and Hridoy then anchored the innings, batting sensibly through the middle overs to keep their wickets intact. Although India kept the pressure on throughout the middle overs, they couldn’t break the partnership.

However, Bangladesh couldn’t finish strongly, losing the remaining five wickets during the death overs, between the 40th and 50th overs.

Jaker made 68 runs off 114 balls, while Hridoy, with a far better strike rate, completed his century, scoring 100 runs off 118 balls, including six fours and two sixes.

Hridoy’s century made him only the fifth Bangladeshi player to score a hundred in an ICC Champions Trophy match. He is also the ninth player in history to score a century on his Champions Trophy debut, and the second Bangladeshi, after Tamim Iqbal, who had scored a century against England in the 2017 edition.

While the batting conditions weren’t too challenging, Bangladesh will regret missing a strong opportunity due to their top-order collapse. It was thanks to Hridoy and Jaker that Bangladesh stayed in the contest.

Netizens lavished praise on Towhid Hridoy for his fighting century:
