MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to face Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match No. 49 of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday, April 30. The CSK vs PBKS match is currently being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
MS Dhoni Takes Over as CSK Captain in IPL 2025 After Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Ouster

In a crucial match for the Men in Yellow, CSK must win all of their remaining five games to stay alive in the race for the playoffs. It’s a do-or-die situation for the team.
In the game, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first. While PBKS made a few changes to their lineup, CSK stuck with the same team that faced Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their previous game, which they lost by five wickets at home.
It’s also worth noting that CSK were defeated by PBKS in their earlier encounter in this season’s tournament.
Not sure if I’ll return for the next game”: MS Dhoni

During the toss between CSK and PBKS, MS Dhoni and Shreyas Iyer had a brief conversation with commentator Danny Morrison. The crowd erupted in cheers as Dhoni made his way to the toss.
As the cheers for Dhoni grew louder, Morrison approached him and asked, “Does this mean you’re returning next season as well?” Dhoni, with a smile, responded, “I don’t even know if I’m returning for the next game.” He was also seen chuckling as he said this to Morrison.
MS Dhoni’s statement could be linked to the fact that this is CSK’s second-last home game of the season. If they lose this match, their chances of making it to the playoffs will be effectively over. Known for making unexpected decisions regarding his retirement, Dhoni has often left fans guessing.
In IPL 2025, CSK has been struggling, currently standing as the worst performers in the tournament. Out of the nine matches they’ve played, they’ve only won two and lost seven. With just four points, they find themselves at the bottom of the points table.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was the captain at the start of IPL 2025 and led the team for the first five matches, had to step down due to an elbow injury. Dhoni then took over as captain. Gaikwad was retained by CSK under the “Uncapped Player” category ahead of the mega auction.
