Joe Root Set for Key Role in England vs India Test Series. Joe Root, who captained the England Test team from 2017 to 2022, will be a vital figure as England gears up to host India in a five-match Test series beginning June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. Ben Stokes will lead England in the series, while a youthful Indian side will be captained by their new Test skipper, Shubman Gill.
Last month, Joe Root became the first English batter—and the fifth overall—to surpass 13,000 Test runs. The right-hander is currently ranked as the number one Test batsman in the ICC rankings.
Joe Root led England in 64 Tests, winning 27, losing 26, and drawing 11 before stepping down as captain in April 2022 following a series defeat to the West Indies. Ben Stokes took over the leadership role thereafter. Root’s experience and form make him a central figure in England’s lineup for the upcoming series.
Joe Root Reflects on Return to Test Side After Stepping Down as Captain

Speaking to Sky Sports, former England skipper Joe Root admitted that rejoining the Test side after giving up the captaincy felt both “difficult and weird.” Root, 34, expressed his desire to fully support new captain Ben Stokes, who had served as his deputy for several years.
“Ben did so much for me as vice-captain, and now it’s my turn to give back. It was definitely strange coming back into the dressing room without being the leader. I didn’t want to interfere or step on Ben’s toes, but I wanted him to know I was there to support him,” Root explained.
He emphasized that scoring runs was a key way for him to contribute and lead by example. “I knew my job was to contribute with the bat and follow Ben’s lead. That sets the tone, especially for new players or those still trying to establish themselves in the team,” he added.
Root also praised the leadership of Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, describing the current team environment as one of the most enjoyable periods of his career.
“This has been the most fun I’ve had playing cricket. The style we’ve embraced and the atmosphere Ben and Brendon have created is incredible. They’ve done a fantastic job, and it’s brought a lot of joy to the team.”
Looking ahead, England will begin their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 campaign with a series against India. Despite their strong performances in red-ball cricket in recent years, England are yet to reach the final in any of the previous three WTC editions.
