“Is the Lord’s Test more important than the entire series?” — Kumar Sangakkara questions India’s call to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the Edgbaston match.

Despite enjoying an eight-day break after the opening Test, Jasprit Bumrah was rested for the second match of the series — a move that has left many surprised.

Among them is Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, who expressed his disbelief at India’s decision to bench their star pacer for the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston, starting July 2.

Jasprit Bumrah, who is reportedly set to feature in only three of the five Tests in this series, had delivered an impressive performance in the first Test at Leeds, claiming five wickets. Yet, the Indian team management — along with vice-captain Shubman Gill — opted to rest him, citing workload management.

The decision appears to be part of a larger strategy to keep  Jasprit Bumrah fresh for the crucial third Test at Lord’s, scheduled to begin on July 10.

“The Series Is on the Line” – Sangakkara Stunned by Jasprit Bumrah Omission

Kumar Sangakkara has expressed disbelief over India’s bold call to rest Jasprit Bumrah, especially with the series hanging in the balance and India’s red-ball record under scrutiny. Since September, India has won just once in nine Tests—losing seven and drawing one—a worrying trend for a team known for its bowling firepower.

The Sri Lankan legend questioned the logic behind the decision, saying the moment called for India’s best players on the field.

“It’s interesting to understand who makes these decisions—are they consulting the players or physios? Because the series is at stake. If you look at the match, it’s evenly poised, maybe even tilting England’s way with five wickets down,” Sangakkara said on Sky Sports.

He suggested that the team management should have considered reworking their original rotation plans, urging a more flexible approach.

“The coach should’ve said to  Jasprit Bumrah, ‘We originally planned for you to play the 3rd and 5th Tests, but we need you now. Play the third if possible—you’ll have a two-week break after.’”

Sangakkara also hinted that India’s constant chopping and changing might be reflective of deeper pressure within the camp.

“It’s not just a response to the last game. You’ve got seven losses in the last nine Tests—there’s clearly some baggage. The team’s feeling the heat and trying to shake things up, searching for answers,” he added.
