MCA President Reveals: Rohit Sharma Persuaded Yashasvi Jaiswal to Remain with Mumbai State Team

Yashasvi Jaiswal once had the green light from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to move to Goa — but Rohit Sharma had other plans for him. MCA president Ajinkya Naik revealed that although Jaiswal received a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the association, Rohit Sharma personally stepped in and convinced the young batter to stay loyal to the team that gave him his platform. According to Naik, Rohit Sharmaurged Jaiswal to continue representing Mumbai, the side where he honed his skills and built his reputation.

The move to Goa was tempting — especially with a captaincy offer that came earlier this year during the IPL. Jaiswal initially approached the MCA for clearance, but later withdrew his request, reaffirming his commitment to play for Mumbai in the 2025–26 season.

Jaiswal’s journey with Mumbai began in 2019 when he made his First-Class debut. Since then, he has piled up 4,233 runs in 43 FC matches at a superb average of 56.44, including 15 centuries and 15 half-centuries. His breakout moment came in the 2019 Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he smashed scores of 113, 122, 203, and an unbeaten 60.

The 2021–22 Ranji Trophy season was another milestone, as he featured in the entire campaign for the first time and struck three consecutive hundreds to propel Mumbai to the final. His domestic heroics paved the way for a national team call-up and an IPL career with Rajasthan Royals (RR).

“It was Mumbai cricket that paved his way to India,” Rohit Sharma reminded Yashasvi Jaiswal

After Rohit Sharma advised Yashasvi Jaiswal to stay in Mumbai during this crucial phase of his career, Jaiswal reconsidered his plans to move to Goa.

Rohit Sharma highlighted the immense pride and legacy of representing a team like Mumbai, which boasts an unparalleled 42 Ranji Trophy titles. Following discussions with several Mumbai and Indian cricketers, Jaiswal decided to remain in Mumbai. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) also agreed to cancel his No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the transfer to Goa.

“Mumbai’s pride and prestige in cricket is unmatched, having won the Ranji Trophy a record 42 times,” MCA president Ajinkya Naik told Mumbai Mirror. “Rohit Sharma reminded Yashasvi not to forget that it was Mumbai cricket that gave him the platform to showcase his talent and eventually represent India. It was here in Mumbai, playing on the maidans, that he began his journey through all age-group teams.”

Jaiswal was last seen in action during India’s five-match Test series against England. He was one of the standout performers, scoring 411 runs in 10 innings at an average of 41.10, including two centuries and two half-centuries.
