As per reports from News24 and Indian Express, the right-handed batter has conveyed that he doesn’t wish to feature in Test cricket at the moment due to recurring back issues and wants to prioritize white-ball formats.
Test cricket: Iyer had led India A in the drawn opening match against Australia A but unexpectedly stepped down from captaincy before the second game, returning to Mumbai. According to the reports, he wrote to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stating that stiffness in his back and fatigue were preventing him from handling the demands of Test cricket. He further informed the selectors that his body is not ready for the physical toll of the format. Following his withdrawal, wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel was appointed as captain of India A.
The 29-year-old was also absent from the previous Test series against England and did not find a place in India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad. His omission sparked discussions within the cricket fraternity. Iyer last appeared in Test cricket for India in February 2024 against England.
