The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to make its highly anticipated return this February after an eight-year hiatus. The previous edition of the tournament was held in 2017 in England.
India’s 2017 Champions Trophy campaign was a rollercoaster of emotions. The team dominated the group stage and semi-final, winning four consecutive matches to reach the final. However, in the decider, they faced a crushing 180-run defeat against Pakistan.
1. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan was India’s third-highest run-scorer in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, amassing 338 runs in five innings at an average of 67.6 and a strike rate of 101.80. His partnerships with Rohit Sharma at the top of the order were instrumental in India’s dominant run to the final. Dhawan announced his retirement from international cricket on August 24, 2024, having played his last ODI against Bangladesh in 2022.
2. MS Dhoni
Former Indian skipper and legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. His final match for India was the 2019 ICC World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, where his runout ended India’s chances of reaching the final. In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Dhoni scored 63 runs in two innings at a strike rate of 98.52.
3. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik was part of India’s 2017 ICC Champions Trophy squad but didn’t play a single game, with all-rounders Kedar Jadhav and Yuvraj Singh preferred in the playing XI. Karthik was a key member of India’s victorious 2013 Champions Trophy campaign. He retired on June 1, 2024, after making his last international appearance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 against Bangladesh.
4. Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh, a legendary all-rounder, retired from international cricket on June 10, 2019. His final match for India was against the West Indies in 2017 at North Sound. In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Yuvraj played as a middle-order batter, scoring 105 runs in five innings at an average of 35 and a strike rate of 99. His standout performance was a 53-run knock against Pakistan in the group stage.
5. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin served as India’s second-choice spinner behind Ravindra Jadeja in the 2017 Champions Trophy. He struggled during the tournament, taking just one wicket in three games at an average of 167. Ashwin was later dropped from the white-ball squads but made a comeback in subsequent years. He retired from international cricket on December 18, 2024, following India’s Test match against Australia in Brisbane.
6. Kedar Jadhav
Kedar Jadhav retired from international cricket on June 3, 2024. He debuted in 2014 and played his last ODI on February 8, 2020, against New Zealand in Auckland. In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Jadhav batted twice, scoring 26 runs at an average of 26, and contributed with the ball by taking three wickets during the tournament.
