On Sunday, January 26, 2025, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Gerhard Erasmus, captain of Namibia, as the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year 2024. Erasmus was honored for his exceptional performances throughout the year, leading Namibia to significant victories over the UAE and Oman.
The year 2024 was pivotal for Associate nations, with many teams given the opportunity to compete in the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024, which featured 20 teams.
Namibia, despite finishing fourth in Group B alongside cricket giants Australia, England, Scotland, and Oman, had a memorable campaign. The team secured a notable win against Oman and came tantalizingly close to defeating Scotland, losing by a narrow five-wicket margin.
Gerhard Erasmus’ performance in 2024
Batting in the middle order, Gerhard Erasmus was a pillar of consistency throughout 2024, delivering solid performances in both ODIs and T20Is with eight half-centuries.
Erasmus had a standout ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, notably scoring a crucial half-century against Scotland and playing a key role in Namibia’s only win, leading the team in the Super Over against Oman.
His best performance of the tournament came against Australia, where he anchored the innings with a steady 36 off 43 balls, helping Namibia reach 72 in 17 overs. He was the only batsman from his team to reach double figures against the formidable Australian bowling attack.
The right-handed batter finished 2024 with 727 international runs and 36 wickets in 25 matches. In ODIs, he scored 364 runs at an average of 33.09 and took 18 wickets at 22.38 in 12 matches. In T20Is, he accumulated 363 runs at an average of 33.00 and claimed 18 wickets at 13.61 in 13 matches.
Expressing his gratitude after receiving the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year Award, Erasmus said, “I’m delighted to have received the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year Award.
