Angelo Mathews announces retirement from Test cricket; will play his final match against Bangladesh

Angelo Mathews made his Test debut in 2009. The seasoned Sri Lankan all-rounder has now announced his retirement from Test cricket. He will play his final Test match next month, stepping away from the longest format after the first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in June 2025.

Mathews has represented Sri Lanka in Test cricket for 16 years, having debuted in July 2009 during a series against Pakistan. He was also part of Sri Lanka’s home Test series against Australia earlier this year in February.

Over his distinguished career, Angelo Mathews has played 118 Test matches for Sri Lanka. He scored 8,167 runs in 210 innings at an impressive average of 44.63, including 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries, with one double century among them. As a bowler, he took 33 wickets in 86 innings, with his best bowling figures being 4 for 44.

Test cricket: Angelo Mathew to continue playing in white-ball formats

Sri Lanka cricket stalwart Angelo Mathew announced his retirement from Test cricket in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account. While he has ended his Test career, he confirmed that he will still be available for white-ball formats.

“The past 17 years of representing Sri Lanka in cricket has been my greatest honour and pride. I have given my all to the game, and in return, cricket has shaped me into the person I am today,” he shared.

“Although I am bidding farewell to Test cricket, after discussions with the selectors, I will remain available for selection in white-ball cricket, whenever my country calls,” the 37-year-old added.

Mathews ranks as Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, trailing only Kumar Sangakkara (12,400 runs) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814 runs). In his most recent Test series against Australia earlier this year, Mathews amassed 125 runs across four innings, including one half-century.

The upcoming Test series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will feature two matches. The first Test is scheduled to start on June 17 in Galle, while the second Test will begin on June 25 in Colombo. Alongside the Test matches, the multi-format series will also include ODI and T20I contests.
