India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir hosted a team dinner in New Delhi, highlighting how informal gatherings strengthen team camaraderie.
Shubman Gill Emphasizes Team Bonding Over Tactics

Following the recent ODI captaincy change, much attention in Indian cricket has focused on a team dinner organized by head coach Gautam Gambhir. Shubman Gill, India’s current Test and ODI skipper, clarified that the gathering was not about secret strategies but about connecting with teammates as individuals.
Ahead of the second Test in Delhi, Shubman Gill highlighted the importance of such off-field interactions for a dressing room that is constantly on the move. Speaking during his pre-match press conference, he stressed that these moments strengthen team cohesion and morale, setting the stage for their upcoming clash against the West Indies starting October 10.
Shubman Gill clears the air about the dinner party

As quoted by ANI, Shubman Gill explained the significance of team dinners, saying, “Team dinners, I think, used to happen before as well. Team dinners, in any tour, you go. So, most of the players are very busy. Many of the players have their own families. In the ground we meet, spend a lot of time together. But a lot of conversations are limited. So, it is important that for any team, that you know each other off the field as well.”
He added, “So, I think, the team dinners that we do, we try two or three times in every series, that the team comes together once, and there is a very light atmosphere,” emphasizing that these gatherings are a recurring tradition, not a one-off event. Ahead of the second Test against the West Indies, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir hosted the squad at his residence in New Delhi, offering a relaxed mid-series pause following a massive win in Ahmedabad. The evening reinforced the idea that strong teams are often built through small, consistent rituals, not just strategy meetings.
For Gill, participating in these gatherings is especially important as he assumes a larger leadership role, now taking charge of the ODI team. Ensuring a positive team atmosphere falls naturally under his responsibilities. Beyond camaraderie, such informal events serve a practical purpose: modern cricket is physically and mentally demanding, and team dinners provide a space for players to unwind, interact freely, and recharge away from the pressures of the game.
