Sourav Ganguly Congratulates Shubman Gill on Becoming India’s ODI Captain. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has congratulated Shubman Gill on being appointed the new ODI captain. Sourav Ganguly praised the selectors’ decision, stating that Gill is the right choice and expressing confidence in the young batter’s potential to lead India successfully in the future.
Ahead of India’s 2025 tour of Australia, Gill took over the reins from Rohit Sharma as the captain of the 50-over team. His first assignment will be the three-match ODI series against Australia, scheduled from October 19 to 25.
Earlier in May, Gill was also named India’s Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement. The 26-year-old led the team to a 2-2 draw in the five-match Test series against England in August and earned the Player of the Series award for his exceptional batting performances.
Sourav Ganguly Supports Naming Shubman Gill as India’s New ODI Captain

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has expressed his support for the decision to appoint Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain. Speaking to reporters, Sourav Ganguly emphasized that Rohit Sharma, the outgoing captain, must have been consulted before the change.
“I am sure Rohit must have been spoken to. I’m confident it was a mutual discussion. Rohit has been an exceptional leader, having won the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy,” Sourav Ganguly said.
He added that promoting Gill at this stage was a smart move, as it allows Rohit to mentor the young batsman for the future.
“Even Shubman Gill will face the same at 40—everyone in sport has to retire someday. Promoting Gill now is a good decision. He has shown great talent, especially in England. It’s a fair call… Rohit can continue playing while grooming a young captain,” Sourav Ganguly remarked.
The former India captain also congratulated Gill on his performances and expressed confidence in his future success.
“I congratulate him. He performed well in England and will continue to do so. The Indian team is very strong, with players performing consistently, which is why they’ve been given this opportunity,” he added.
Gill is currently playing in the second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, with India leading the two-match series 1-0 after a commanding victory in Ahmedabad. The squad is set to depart for Australia on October 15.
The upcoming ODI series against Australia will also mark the much-anticipated return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Ko
